Romans & Wine
Today we had a class trip to Trier, Germany. Trier is said to be the oldest city of Germany, first settled by the Romans over 2000 years ago. And they have proof. To begin the day, we stopped in the hills of Trier and looked down on the city as our tour guide explained how the city grew from a Roman military camp to what it is today. Again, in this region, there are a lot of wineries. After our mountain top view, we headed down into the city and looked at the over 2000 year old Roman city gate. After roaming the city for a few hours we headed back on the bus to a vineyard near Bonn. At the vineyard we learned about wine production, had dinner, and a wine tasting of 5 of the local wines produced in the last few years. In the wine cellar we saw hundreds of barrels and even hundred year old wine bottles. It was a good ending to the day. We did not see much of Trier as we all hoped we would. I really wanted to see the roman bath ruins in the center of the city, but we did not have time and it began to rain. We could go back on our own dime/time, but we have other things planed so it may not happen; might save it for another Europe trip.
Tomorrow should be good. There is a traveling fair (Puetzchen's Markt) that comes to Bonn around this time every year. It is suppose to have authentic lederhosen, "umpa umpa" music, and more. I hope to get some good photos then.
